Training in Woodbury

Why Woodbury residents train at home

Woodbury is a residential hamlet of roughly 9,300 people in the Town of Oyster Bay, bordered by Syosset to the west, Plainview to the south, Laurel Hollow to the north and Cold Spring Harbor to the east.4 It's a place you drive out of. There's no village high street with a gym on it, the Northern State Parkway clips the southern edge, and commuters use the Syosset or Cold Spring Harbor stations rather than a station of their own.

Which means that for most people here, "going to the gym" starts with getting in the car — and ends with getting back in it. As a personal trainer serving Woodbury, Syosset, Plainview, Muttontown, Jericho, Melville and Farmingdale, Hannah removes that trip entirely. She arrives with the equipment, the programme and 19+ years of coaching, and your living room becomes the studio.

The target

What a week of exercise is actually supposed to look like

Before talking about programmes, it helps to know the number you're aiming at. The U.S. physical activity guidelines for adults are specific, and most people are surprised by the strength half of them.

Aerobic activity150 min / week minimum

Moderate intensity — or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent mix.

Muscle-strengthening2+ days / week minimum

Working all the major muscle groups. This is the half most people skip entirely.

Hannah's sessions combine resistance work with interval conditioning, so two to three sessions a week clears the muscle-strengthening minimum outright and makes a substantial dent in the aerobic one. The rest is walking, tennis, golf or whatever you already enjoy.

Where the time goes

The drive is the part nobody budgets for

Lack of time is the most consistently reported barrier to exercise across every age group studied — and it holds regardless of gender or how genuinely busy someone is.3 In Woodbury, a good share of that "lack of time" is simply the round trip to a gym in a neighbouring hamlet.

The real cost of one gym session

Typical weekday, door to door
At a gym≈ 2 hours
At home in Woodbury45–60 min
45–60 min — training, the only productive part
15–20 min — drive to the gym
15 min — park, change, warm up
10–15 min — wait for equipment at peak hours
25–30 min — shower and drive home

Three sessions a week at a gym costs you about 6 hours. Most of it is logistics. At home, the same three sessions cost under 3 hours — and every minute of it is coached.

Why a coach, not an app

What direct supervision actually changes

Training at home doesn't mean training alone. The distinction matters more than most people expect, and it has been measured directly.

From the research

In a 2023 study published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, resistance-trained participants were randomised to supervised or unsupervised training over eight weeks. The supervised group gained more muscle (about 0.54 kg more lean mass) and made greater lower-body strength gains — roughly 4 kg more on the back squat.

The finding that matters most for real life, though, was adherence: the unsupervised group had seven dropouts to the supervised group's two. Programmes don't usually fail because they're badly written. They fail because people stop doing them.

Coleman et al. (2023), Journal of Sports Sciences, 41(12), 1207–1217.2

That's the case for in-person coaching in plain terms. Every session is watched, every rep is corrected, and someone is standing in your living room at 6:15 on a Tuesday whether or not you feel like it.

Programmes

Programmes available to Woodbury residents

Every programme is built from scratch after an initial movement assessment, but most clients start in one of these seven areas.

Adults 55 and older

Strength training doesn't stop mattering — it starts mattering more

A meaningful share of Woodbury's households are empty-nesters and retirees, and it's the group for whom resistance training has the clearest evidence behind it.

From the research

The National Strength and Conditioning Association's position statement on resistance training for older adults recommends training two to three times per week per muscle group, using 2–3 sets of 8–12 repetitions on multi-joint exercises, with power work at moderate loads moved quickly.

The documented outcomes go well beyond muscle: improved mobility and physical function, better performance of everyday activities, fall prevention, preserved independence and improved psychological wellbeing — with benefits demonstrated even in adults aged 85 and over.

Fragala et al. (2019), Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 33(8), 2019–2052.5

Hannah is NSCA-certified, which is the body that wrote that statement. Sessions for older clients are progressed slowly, supervised rep by rep, and built around balance and joint tolerance rather than load for its own sake.

Scheduling

Sessions built around your calendar

Two windows cover most Woodbury households — the pre-commute slot and the post-dinner one.

12 AM6 AM12 PM6 PM12 AM
6:00 – 8:00 AM
Perfect for
Commuters heading for the Syosset or Cold Spring Harbor trains, and parents who want it done before the school run.
The advantage
Finished, showered and on the platform without the day having started yet.
7:00 – 8:30 PM
Perfect for
Late-working professionals, and anyone who trains once the house is quiet.
The advantage
Decompress after work, sleep deeper, and skip the drive home from a gym.

Most clients book two to three sessions per week. Travelling for work, a meeting overrunning or family visiting are all worked around rather than charged for — subject to the 24-hour notice policy.

The case for training at home

Why Woodbury clients keep it in the house

  • No drive either way. The single biggest time cost of a gym disappears completely.
  • Total privacy. No crowded floor, no judgment, no queue for a squat rack.
  • Undivided attention. Every rep is coached for form, safety and result.
  • Faster progress. Programmes evolve with you instead of staying static.
  • Built-in accountability. Hannah shows up on time, every time, rain or shine.
  • Family-friendly. Train at home while the kids do homework or sleep upstairs.
  • Your environment. Your space, your music, your pace.
The first 12 weeks

What to expect, and roughly when

Individual results vary with starting point, consistency and nutrition, but this is the pattern Hannah's Woodbury and Syosset clients most commonly report across three sessions a week.

Week 1–2

Better sleep and steadier energy. The mid-afternoon crash starts to flatten out.

Week 3–4

Clothes fit differently. First strength improvements show up inside the session itself.

Week 6–8

Visible change in body composition, alongside sharper focus through the workday.

Week 8–12

Significant strength gains, a leaner midsection, and a routine that now runs itself.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you actually come to homes in Woodbury?

Yes — Woodbury is one of the primary service areas, along with Syosset, Plainview, Muttontown, Jericho, Melville and Farmingdale. There's no travel surcharge within that footprint, and no studio visit is ever required.

How much space do I need at home?

About a 6 × 8 foot clear area is enough. A living room, finished basement, garage or patio all work. Hannah brings every piece of equipment, so nothing needs buying or storing.

What does a Woodbury personal trainer cost?

Rates start at $130 per session. Final pricing is confirmed during the free consultation and depends on session frequency and programme type. Most clients train two to three times a week.

Is training at home as effective as a gym?

For most general-fitness goals, yes — and the research on supervision suggests the coaching matters more than the equipment. A 2023 randomised study found supervised trainees gained more strength and muscle than unsupervised ones, and were far more likely to still be training at the end of the programme.2

I haven't exercised in years. Is this suitable?

Yes. Every programme opens with a movement assessment and progresses at your pace. A large share of clients start completely de-conditioned, and the foundational training track exists precisely for that.

I'm over 60. Is resistance training safe for me?

Supervised resistance training is well supported for older adults, with documented benefits for strength, mobility, fall prevention and independence — including in adults over 85.5 Loads are progressed gradually and every rep is supervised. Clear it with your physician first if you have a cardiac, orthopaedic or metabolic condition.

What times are available?

Monday to Friday 6 AM–6 PM, and Saturday 7 AM–12 PM. The 6:00–8:00 AM and 7:00–8:30 PM windows are the most popular. Sunday is closed.

What's the cancellation policy?

24 hours' notice is required to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations are subject to a fee.

Do you offer nutrition advice?

General nutrition guidance, yes — how to eat around training, travel and business dinners. Hannah is not a registered dietitian and doesn't provide medical nutrition therapy or prescribe diets for clinical conditions.

Getting started

Turn your house into the gym you'd actually go to

The hardest part of training in Woodbury has never been the workout. It's the twenty minutes on either side of it. Take those out and consistency stops being a willpower problem.
